SUMMARY: Radar or Lidar What to Choose for Automotive Applications
DESCRIPTION:This lecture addresses one of the hottest technological debates in the modern automobile industry: selecting radar or LiDAR technologies for autonomous and active safety-equipped vehicles. The lecture presents a structured comparison of the two technologies\, focusing on their distinct operational characteristics\, advantages\, and limitations. Radar and LiDAR operate at different frequency bands\, which leads to significant differences in how they interact with the environment. Radar is favored for its robustness in adverse weather and low-light conditions\, providing long-range detection at a relatively low cost. It also allows for flexible integration behind nontransparent vehicle fascia\, making it highly adaptable for commercial vehicle use. On the other hand\, LiDAR offers superior angular resolution and spatiotemporal consistency\, which are critical for tasks such as object recognition and mapping in autonomous driving.\nThis lecture begins by outlining the core functionalities of radar and lidar systems and exploring how their unique physical properties\, such as wavelength and propagation behaviors\, influence their performance in various driving scenarios. Key factors such as range\, accuracy\, detection reliability\, and operational costs will be evaluated\, along with a detailed analysis of signal processing techniques used by each sensor type. Additionally\, the limitations of LiDAR\, including its higher cost and sensitivity to environmental factors\, will be contrasted with radar's challenges\, such as interference and resolution constraints.\nBy highlighting recent advancements in both technologies\, including digital radars with high-resolution imaging capabilities and efforts to reduce the cost of long-range LiDAR\, this lecture aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the trade-offs involved in choosing between radar and LiDAR for different automotive applications. Future research directions\, such as the integration of multi-sensor systems and potential cross-modality innovations\, will also be discussed to inspire further developments in autonomous vehicle sensing technologies.\nSpeaker(s): \, Igal Bilik\nAgenda:\n11:00-11:50 Lecture\n11:50-12:00 QNA\nRoom: 11\, Bldg: Kitot Handasa\, Tel Aviv University\, Tel Aviv\, Central District\, Israel

SUMMARY:Accelerating Secure Computing for IoT Sensors - Elkim Felipe Roa Fuentes\, Samsung Semiconductor Inc.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nSecurity in IoT sensors has focused on cryptography-based but has failed to consider System-on-Chip (SoC) interoperability during side-channel\, and physical attacks\, as they concentrate solely on standalone behavior. This talk will discuss SoC security solutions that shield a SoC against supply voltage and physical attacks while apprising SoC interoperation. Along with the supply monitoring shields\, this talk will present an efficient AES-256b encryption module accelerator\, a physical unclonable function\, and a true random number generator as SoC peripheral instances.\nBio:\nElkim received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 2014\, where he was a Fulbright Scholar\, his M.S degree from the University of São Paulo\, São Paulo\, Brazil\, and his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Universidad Industrial de Santander\, Colombia. He is currently a SoC Architect in Samsung Semiconductor Inc. working on computing acceleration for 4G/5G modems systems. Prior to Samsung\, he has worked with Rambus Inc. and GlobalFoundries on high-speed communications\, systems engineering for projects solving communications bandwidth and computing bottlenecks. He was an Associate Professor at Universidad Industrial de Santander from 2016 to 2021. His research interests include SoC architecture\, high-speed interfaces\, computing acceleration\, and efficient AI computing.\nThe webinar is free but registration is required. Zoom link will be sent after registration.\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/482054
