SUMMARY:Power efficiency in the next generation of 5G-6G analog front-ends - Prof. Antonio Liscidini\, University of Toronto\, Canada
DESCRIPTION:Nowadays\, both digital and analog electronics are reaching fundamental limits that will require revolutionary approaches to satisfy the power/bandwidth requirements of the next generation of data-driven applications.\nAfter a brief overview of the modern wireless transceiver architecture\, some key elements that will characterize 5G and 6G networks will be discussed. The talk will continue by analyzing the power efficiency of the analog signal processing by highlighting the presence of a thermodynamic upper-bound which relates dynamic range\, bandwidth and power dissipation. Alternative strategies to circumvent this limit will be discusses such as adaptivity\, passive time-variant signal processing and quantized analog signal processing. In particular\, the latter represents a novel approach where the analog and digital domain are fused together in a more fluid scenario compared to traditional mixed-signal circuits. This operation leads to superior power efficiency and flexibility.\nThe effectiveness of the proposed solutions will be demonstrated through simulations and measurement results on different prototypes.\nAntonio Liscidini received the Laurea (summa cum laude) and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Pavia\, Pavia\, Italy\, in 2002 and 2006\, respectively.\nHe was a summer Intern with National Semiconductors\, Santa Clara\, CA\, USA\, in 2003\, studying poly phase filters and CMOS low-noise amplifiers. From 2008 to 2012\, he was an Assistant Professor with the University of Pavia and a consultant with Marvell Semiconductors\, Pavia\, in the area of integrated circuit. In 2012\, he moved to the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, University of Toronto\, Toronto\, ON\, Canada\, where he is currently an Associate professor. In 2019 he has become consultant for Huawei Technology Group in the area of RFIC for optical communication. His research interests are focused on analog mixed signal interfaces with particular emphasis on the implementations of transceivers and frequency synthesizers for wireless and wireline communication.\nDr. Liscidini was a recipient of the Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE 2005 Symposium on VLSI Circuits and co-recipient of the Best Invited Paper Award at the 2011 IEEE CICC and the Best Student Paper Award at the 2018 IEEE ESSCIRC. He has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs (2008-2011) (2017- 2018) and for the IEEE Open Journal of Solid-State Circuit Society (2021)\, as a Guest Editor for the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (2013) (2016) and Guest Editor of the IEEE RFIC Virtual Journal (2018). He has been member of the ISSCC TPC (2012- 2017)\, of the ESSCIRC TPC (2010-2018)\, and of the CICC TPC (2019-currently). Between 2016 and 2018\, he has been a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society.\nImportant: The participation is free of charge\, but registration is required\n[/registration-antonio-liscidini/](https://acrc.net.technion.ac.il/registration-antonio-liscidini/).\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/297823

SUMMARY:Ultra Wide Band Surveillance Radar
DESCRIPTION:Ultra Wide Band Surveillance Radar\nDr. Mark E. Davis\nAESS Distinguished Lecturer\, IEEE Life Fellow\nMedavis Consulting\, Prospect NY\, USA\nUltra Wide Band Surveillance Radar is an emerging technology for detecting and\ncharacterizing targets and cultural features for military and geosciences applications.\nIt is essential to have fine range and cross-range resolution to characterize objects\nnear and under severe clutter. This Tutorial is divided into five parts.\n The Early History of Battlefield Surveillance Radar: Battlefield surveillance\nfrom manned and unmanned aircraft\, along with early experiments in fixed\nand moving target detection and foliage penetration are covered.\n UWB Phased Array Antenna: Wideband waveforms place a significant\ndemand on the ESA design to maintain gain and sidelobe characteristics.\nDesign of ESA systems with time delay steering and digital beamforming will\nbe described.\n UWB Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR): A brief description of several UWB\nsurveillance SAR systems will be provided\, along with illustrations of the SAR\nimage and fixed object detection capability.\n UWB Ground Moving Target Indication: Space time adaptive processing\n(STAP) has been used for over 20 years for detecting and tracking moving\ntargets in clutter. As the resolution is improved for target characterization\,\nthe limits of STAP are tested. This section will discuss two approaches for\nincreasing the bandwidth and maintaining geolocation accuracy: wideband\nSTAP and Along Track Interferometry.\n New research in Multi-mode Ultra-Wideband Radar\, with the design of both\nSAR and moving target indication (MTI) FOPEN systems. The last section of\nthe lecture will illustrate new technologies that have promise for future\nmultimode operation: simultaneous SAR and GMTI in a multichannel radar.\nSunday\, October 31\, 2021\, 15:00\nRoom 011\, Kitot building\nRoom: Auditorium 011\, Bldg: Engineering Classroom Building\, Tel Aviv University \, Tel Aviv\, Tel Aviv District\, Israel\, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/286430

SUMMARY:Automotive Radar perception thoughts towards AV
DESCRIPTION:Automotive Radar perception thoughts towards AV\nTakeaways:\n– Everybody speaks about vision and lidar systems\, but Radar is an indispensable key technology for highly automated and autonomous ADAs\n– HW-SW Co-Design is essential to come to the next level\n– High Performance radar versus smart radar networks – some thoughts\n– Radar perception can benefit performance\, if machine learning is applied to it\n– Massive AI is entering the Radar-Perception arena.\nAbstract:\nOver decades automotive driver assistance systems have developed from simple park assistance and ACC to highly complex L3 functions. Among other issues\, that has been driven by the dramatic development of radar sensor technology and radar based perception. Radar can “see”\, where other sensors can´t. Due to their performance to be packaged nearly invisible\, modern cars can still appear as design artwork icons\, like the present EQ-S. With the development towards higher automatization the total perception system has to provide much more comprehensive and precise information to the path planning and behavior stages in order to allow proper operation. Based on our experience with the “Bertha Drive” as quasi autonomous vehicle\, we got inside what is needed in the future. One outcome of our L4/L5 research projects was\, the sensor technology in cooperation with perception algo-concepts have to develop along other lines as compared to simple L2 systems. The key note will line out from a radar point of view what has been achieved so far and what will be needed in the future for L3 to L5 driving.\nDr.-Ing. Juergen Dickmann is head of Radar sensors and radar-based perception for highly automated/autonomous driving\, Mercedes-Benz AG. In this role he is responsible for the 6th generation at Mercedes-Benz AG and future radar solutions towards autonomous driving. In the automotive field\, he introduced for the first time AI concepts for Radar and exploited Radar usage beyond ranging and detection for comprehensive environment perception. Before that\, he managed the technology transfer process of all perception sensing (Radar\, Laser\, Video\, localization etc.) technologies from research into series for former passenger car platforms. He conducted radar research and pre-developments for radar-based Pre-Crash and driver assistant systems for all company platforms (Passenger cars\, Busses\, Van\, Truck) inside DAIMLER Chrysler AG\, where he introduced Lidar technology in Chrysler cars. In 1986 he started his career at AEG Research Center\, where he did research on III/V-semiconductor processing techniques\, mm-Wave device and MMIC-design (up to 120GHz). He achieved several records in high frequency devices and MMICs with III/V semiconductors. He got the academic award “Preis der VDE/ITG” in 1993. The research achievements of him and his group can be found in https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Juergen_Dickmann. He holds various patents.\nSpeaker(s): Juergen Dickmann\,\nAgenda:\n10:00-11:00 Meeting BGU Autonomous Driving Race Team\n11:00- 12:00 BGU Autonomous Platforms (BGU ECE research labs)\n12:00-13:00 Automotive Radar perception thoughts towards AV ECE BGU Seminar\n13:00-15:00 Autonomous vehicle Cyber security with BGU accelerator team\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/298697

SUMMARY:PCB Course
DESCRIPTION:The Robotics and Automation society\, in partnership with the Power and Energy\, Industrial Applications societies\, and IEEE Palestine YP AG\, prepared a course entitled PCB Design\, which is a course about circuits printed on a board used to connect electronic components electrically as they are the basis of electronic circuits used in all electronic commercial products\, and is based on the use of a chemical solution to dissolve a conducting copper plate for electricity and leaves only the parts to be left that were previously covered with a substance that prevents the solution from reaching the copper layer\, due to the continuous development in the field of applied electronics\, many of the students have ideas for projects to implement\, but the obstacle is always at the manufacturing stage\, and how to give the project a good shape and design. Traditional methods do not suffice\, hence the need to learn a new skill\, which is how to manufacture printed circuits and the sound foundations on which to build your design. This course will be a link between theoretical content and practical application.\nCourse topics:\n1-The basics of proper design of printed circuits\n2- How to draw an electrical circuit diagram\n3- How to convert this diagram to a printed circuit\n4- Complete electronic board design and implementation\n5- Soldering the different components on the board\nThe course consisted of four meetings spreaded over two weeks\, presented by the\nengineers Abdullah Hinnawi and Munir Al-Agbar\, who helped and supervised the\nconstruction of the circuit from the theoretical and practical side until its end.\nNablus\, West Bank\, Palestine

SUMMARY:Cryo-CMOS electrical interfaces for large-scale quantum computers - Prof. Fabio Sebastiano\, Delft University of Technology\, Delft\, The Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:Quantum computers operate by processing information stored in quantum bits (qubits)\, which must typically operate at cryogenic temperature. Today the qubits are mostly controlled by conventional electronics working at room temperature. This thermal gap can be readily bridged by a few wires since today’s quantum computers employ only a few qubits. However\, practical quantum computers will require more than thousands of qubits\, making this approach impractical. A more scalable approach requires operating a complex electronic interface at cryogenic temperature\, very close to the quantum processor\, eventually in the same package or even on the same chip. Thanks to its high integration capabilities\, CMOS is the most viable technology for such a cryogenic interface. In this talk\, we will first review the functionalities required to drive and control the most popular qubit technologies\, and the requirements on the performance of the electronics. Based on those requirements and the behavior of CMOS devices at cryogenic temperature\, several state-of-the-art cryo-CMOS circuits and systems have been designed\, both for qubit drive and readout\, and we will show their verification with real-world qubits\, highlighting challenges and opportunities. Finally\, the prospects towards large-scale quantum computers will be outlined\, and we will try to answer the questions: Is the electronics a bottleneck for future quantum computers? How will we design cryo-CMOS circuits to tackle this challenge?\nFabio Sebastiano received the B.Sc. (cum laude) and M.Sc. (cum laude) degrees in electrical engineering from University of Pisa\, Italy\, in 2003 and 2005\, respectively\, the M.Sc. degree (cum laude) from Sant’Anna school of Advanced Studies\, Pisa\, Italy\, in 2006 and the Ph.D. degree from Delft University of Technology\, The Netherlands\, in 2011.\nFrom 2006 to 2013\, he was with NXP Semiconductors Research in Eindhoven\, The Netherlands\, where he conducted research on fully integrated CMOS frequency references\, nanometer temperature sensors\, and area-efficient interfaces for magnetic sensors. In 2013\, he joined Delft University of Technology\, where he is currently an Associate Professor and the Research Lead of the Quantum Computing Division of QuTech. He has authored or co-authored one book\, 11 patents\, and over 80 technical publications. His main research interests are cryogenic electronics\, quantum computing\, sensor read-outs\, and fully integrated frequency references.\nImportant: The participation is free of charge\, but registration is required\n[/registration-fabio-sebastiano/](https://acrc.net.technion.ac.il/registration-fabio-sebastiano/)\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/298987

SUMMARY:Digital Predistortion for 5G MIMO Transmitters Using Machine Learning
DESCRIPTION:Digital predistortion (DPD) has been widely adopted to keep RF power amplifier operating with high efficiency without losing linearity in the exiting 4G systems. It is expected that DPD will continue to be deployed in 5G systems. However\, due to shifting from the single antenna to the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) phased array and continuously increased signal bandwidth\, system designers face significant challenges in managing power consumption and meeting linearity requirement of wireless transmitters. In this talk\, we will discuss how the recently developed machine learning techniques can be utilised to resolve some of the issues in linearizing 5G MIMO systems\, including data-clustering assisted DPD for multiple dynamic configurations\, model tree-based behavioural model construction and simplified model extraction techniques.\nSpeaker(s): Prof Anding Zhu\,\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/297808
