SUMMARY:Digital Predistortion for 5G MIMO Transmitters Using Machine Learning - Prof. Anding Zhu\, University College Dublin\, Ireland
DESCRIPTION:Digital predistortion (DPD) has been widely adopted to keep RF power amplifier operating with high efficiency without losing linearity in the exiting 4G systems. It is expected that DPD will continue to be deployed in 5G systems. However\, due to shifting from the single antenna to the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) phased array and continuously increased signal bandwidth\, system designers face significant challenges in managing power consumption and meeting linearity requirement of wireless transmitters. In this talk\, we will discuss how the recently developed machine learning techniques can be utilised to resolve some of the issues in linearizing 5G MIMO systems\, including data-clustering assisted DPD for multiple dynamic configurations\, model tree-based behavioural model construction and simplified model extraction techniques.\nAnding Zhu received the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from University College Dublin (UCD)\, Dublin\, Ireland\, in 2004. He is currently a Professor with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering\, UCD. His research interests include high-frequency nonlinear system modeling and device characterization techniques\, high-efficiency power amplifier design\, wireless transmitter architectures\, digital signal processing\, and nonlinear system identification algorithms. He has published more than 160 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles. Professor Zhu served as the Secretary of Administrative Committee (AdCom) of IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) in 2018. He is currently an Elected Member of MTT-S AdCom\, the Chair of Electronic Information Committee and the Vice Chair of Publications Committee. He is also the Chair of MTT-S Microwave High-Power Techniques Committee and a Track Editor of IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques.\nImportant: The participation is free of charge\, but registration is required\n[/registration-anding-zhu/](https://acrc.net.technion.ac.il/registration-anding-zhu/)\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/298988

SUMMARY:Real-Time End-to-End Prediction of Driving Routes
DESCRIPTION:https://en-engineering.tau.ac.il/Department-of-Industrial-Engineering/event16-12-2021?gid=19\nMoran Sorka is an M.Sc student in the Department of Industrial Engineering\nFor a long time now\, location data has not been the sole preserve of navigation devices\, and nowadays such user data is collected from almost all electronic devices. The wealth of data and the ever increasing ability of processing such vast quantities\, offers unprecedented information to analyze human mobility\, cultivating an extensive variety of applications in location-based services such as intelligent transportation systems and smart cities. In recent years\, many studies have been conducted into predicting the next location the user is expected to reach\, based on a history of previous locations. Existing route-prediction methods have difficulty coping with a large number of trips\, all the more so if they are spread across a wide geographical area.\nRoom: 206\, Bldg: Wolfson\, Tel-Aviv University\, Tel Aviv\, Tel Aviv District\, Israel\, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/303454

SUMMARY:Bringing ML to the extreme edge: a story of co-optimizing processor architectures\, scheduling and models
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to a free online seminar on “Bringing ML to the extreme edge: a story of co-optimizing processor architectures\, scheduling and models” given by Prof. Marian Verhelst\, KU Leuven\, Belgium.\nDeep neural network inference comes with significant computational complexity\, making their execution until recently only feasible on power-hungry server or GPU platforms. The recent trend towards real-time embedded neural network processing on edge and extreme edge devices requires a thorough cross-layer optimization. The talk will analyze what impacts NN execution energy and latency. Subsequently\, we will present different research lines of Prof. Verhelst’s lab exploiting and jointly optimizing NPU/TPU processor architectures\, dataflow schedulers and conditional\, quantized neural network models for minimum latency and maximum energy efficiency. This includes precision-scalable fully-digital designs\, as well as compute-in-memory processors. Finally\, this talk will make a case for more methodological design space exploration in the vast optimization space of embedded NN processors\, using the ZigZag framework.\nPlease sign up and join us on Wednesday\, January 19\, 2022 at 10:00 (Israel Time).\nA link to the Zoom session will be provided after registration.\nImportant: The participation is free of charge\, but registration is required https://acrc.net.technion.ac.il/registration-marian-verhelst/\nFor more details and updates on the series of “ACRC Semiconductor Webinars” please follow our newsletters and our website https://acrc.net.technion.ac.il/\nHaifa\, Haifa District\, Israel\, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/297199

SUMMARY:Lightning Interaction with Transmission and Distribution Power Systems
DESCRIPTION:The growing use of sensitive electronic devices and the increasing demand of utility customers for stability of the power supply in the recent years have emphasized the importance of improving the reliability and power quality levels of electric systems. Although various phenomena and situations can cause disturbances on power transmission and distribution networks\, lightning is usually responsible for a significant amount of unscheduled supply interruptions and permanent damages to equipment such as distribution transformers\, as well as damages to or malfunction of sensitive electronic equipment. It is therefore essential to evaluate the lightning electromagnetic environment in order to mitigate its effects and improve the power system quality. In this lecture\, the major mechanisms by which lightning overvoltages can be produced on power transmission and distribution (medium and low-voltage) systems are explained\, the general characteristics of the overvoltages are evaluated and their dependence upon the network configuration and some of the most important ground and stroke parameters are discussed\, with examples of measured and calculated voltage waveshapes.\nSpeaker(s): Alexandre Piantini \,\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/301750

The webinars offer insightful and enriching talks held by international leaders and professionals of the computer society sector.\nThe next free online webinar will include two talks:\n– “Embracing the Resiliency of Deep Neural Networks: Rethinking Old Mechanisms” by Dr. Gil Shomron\, Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty\, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.\nDeep neural networks (DNNs) have gained tremendous momentum in recent years\, both in academia and industry. Yet\, DNNs are compute intensive and may require billions of multiply-and-accumulate operations for a single input query. Limited resources\, such as those in IoT devices\, latency constraints\, and high input throughput\, all drive research and development of efficient computing methods for DNN execution. In our research\, we rethink two well-known CPU methods – simultaneous multithreading (SMT) and value prediction – and map them to the new environment introduced by DNNs\, by leveraging their unique characteristics. With SMT\, we propose a new concept of non-blocking SMT (NB-SMT)\, in which execution units are shared among several computational flows to avoid idle MAC operations due to zero-valued operands. We present and discuss the path from a data-driven “blocking” SMT design to the concept of NB-SMT\, to a fine-tuned sparsity-aware quantization method. As for value prediction\, we present prediction schemes which leverage the inherent spatial correlation in CNN feature maps to predict zero-valued activations. By speculating which activations will be zero-valued\, we potentially reduce the required MAC operations.\n– “On a Recoverability of Graph Neural Network Representations” by Dr. Chaim Baskin\, Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty\, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.\nDespite their growing popularity\, graph neural networks (GNNs) still have multiple unsolved problems\, including finding more expressive aggregation methods\, propagation of information to distant nodes\, and training on large-scale graphs. Understanding and solving such problems require developing analytic tools and techniques. In this work\, we propose the notion of recoverability\, which is tightly related to information aggregation in GNNs\, and based on this concept\, develop the method for GNN embedding analysis. We define recoverability theoretically and propose a method for its efficient empirical estimation. We demonstrate\, through extensive experimental results on various datasets and different GNN architectures\, that estimated recoverability correlates with aggregation method expressivity and graph sparsification quality. Therefore\, we believe that the proposed method could provide an essential tool for understanding the roots of the aforementioned problems\, and potentially lead to a GNN design that overcomes them.\nThe Webinar is free\, but pre-registration is required. So\, please sign up using the below link https://technion.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_-vxCyWMpRO2sSVyJT2h40A and the Zoom session details will be provided after registration.\nPlease contact us for any further details and updates on the series of IEEE Computer Society Webinars.\nWe are looking forward to your participation and future collaboration.\nProf. Avi Mendelson Prof. Freddy Gabbay\nAvi.mendelson@technion.ac.il freddyg@ruppin.ac.il\nChairman Vice-Chair\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/307733

SUMMARY:Reasoning and Decision Making in Model-System Architecting
DESCRIPTION:Abstract. This lecture presents a Model-Based System Architecting (MBSA) framework that has recently been published as a chapter in the Handbook of Model-Based Systems Engineering. The MBSA framework facilitates the specification of architecture as a reasoning process – a series of conceptualization and decision-making activities\, backed up by an MBSE environment. The framework captures both the ontology of a stakeholder-driven and solution-oriented system architecture\, and the process of growing the architecture as a series of conceptualization steps through five ontological domains: the stakeholder domain\, the mission domain\, the capability domain\, the Tradespace\, and the solution architecture. Our MBSA approach shifts the modeling focus from recording to conceptualizing\, exploring\, decision-making\, and innovating. In comparison to an “offline” architecting process\, our approach may initially require a bigger effort but should enable stronger stakeholder engagement\, clearer architectural decision point framing\, quicker exploration\, better long-term viability\, and increased model robustness. We show how the framework was applied for modeling and analysis of a mission architecture. We will discuss the implementation of the framework using both Object Process Methodology (OPM) and the Systems Modeling Language (SysML). We will also discuss the suitability of this framework for functional analysis in accordance with the FAST methodology.\nThree main references that this lecture relies on\, in addition to several others\, are:\n– Mordecai\, Y.\, & Crawley\, E. SUMMARY:Wireless Power Transfer – from Science Fiction to Reality
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Dr. Chris Mi\, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\nAbstract:\nOver the past 100 years\, scientists have been searching for solutions to realize wireless power transfer reliably and efficiently. Their goal? A tether-free world. It is only in the past ten years that this has become reality. With the help of semiconductor devices\, electromagnetic materials\, and microcomputers\, we can now not only charge a cell phone wirelessly\, but we can also charge an electric car or a humongous electric ship without plugging it in. In this talk\, Professor Chris Mi will look at how his work has made wireless power transfer cheaper\, faster\, safer and more efficient\, enabling cable-free conference rooms\, battery-less drones\, and factories populated by untethered robots and autonomous vehicles.\nBio: Dr. Mi is the Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at San Diego State University. He is a Fellow of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers). He is also the Director of the US Department of Energy-funded Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) Center for Electric Drive Transportation at SDSU. He was previously a faculty member at the University of Michigan-Dearborn from 2001 to 2015\, and an Electrical Engineer with General Electric from 2000 to 2001. He also served as the CTO of 1Power Solutions from 2008 to 2011. Dr. Mi received his Ph. D from the University of Toronto\, Canada\, in 2001.\nDr. Mi has won numerous awards\, including the “Distinguished Teaching Award” and “Distinguished Research Award” from the University of Michigan-Dearborn\, IEEE Region 4 “Outstanding Engineer Award\,” IEEE Southeastern Michigan Section “Outstanding Professional Award\,” and SAE “Environmental Excellence in Transportation (E2T) Award.” He is the recipient of three Best Paper Awards from IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and the 2017 ECCE Student Demonstration Award. In 2019\, he received the Inaugural IEEE Power Electronics Emerging Technology Award. In 2022\, he received the Albert W. Johnson Lecture Award and named the Distinguished Professor\, the highest honor for any given to a SDSU faculty member\, and only one award is given each year.\nDr. Mi has received over $5.8 million in research funding since joining SDSU in 2015. He has published five books\, 204 journal papers\, 126 conference papers\, and 25 issued and pending patents. He served as Editor-in-Chief\, Area Editor\, Guest Editor\, and Associate Editor of multiple IEEE Transactions and international journals\, as well as the General Chair of over ten IEEE international conferences.\nCo-sponsored by: IEEE VTC Distinguished lecture\nSpeaker(s): Chris Mi\,\nRoom: 202\, Bldg: 37\, Ben Gurion University\, Yitshak Reger 1\, Beer Sheva\, Southern District\, Israel\, 27707
